Holiday Open House 2010

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Foundation's Holiday Open House on December 1, 2010. We host this event because want all of our donors to feel connected to our mission and have opportunities to come together with us. This year's Open House, held at LCC's West Campus, went over great! It was so exciting to see our family of donors and LCC employees come together while enjoying some great food and entertainment. It reminds us of how many amazing people share the same mission of supporting LCC students through scholarship.

Not only was there great food and entertainment, but there was a fabulous silent auction. Guess what?! All of the items were sold and proceeds go into our General Scholarship Fund to provide more money for students. This was our second silent auction at our Holiday Open House and we hope that you enjoyed it as much as us. There were so many great things to bid on! Many of the items highlighted skills and talents found at Lansing Community College including but not limited to: Introductory Flight Lessons, Ride-Alongs with our Truck Driver Training and LCC Police, and Interior and Landscape Design prizes. Some other popular pieces were handcrafted items such as Hand-Turned Wooden Bowls, a Fishing Lure, and a Wire-Beaded Hostess Set. There were also several autographed items by sports figures and coaches, plus so much more! Watch for our auction next year, as it is sure to have more exciting items.

We were also able to highlight the talents of a member of our Music Faculty who greeted guests with some beautiful holiday music. We could hear her voice and the accompanying piano upstairs at the party too, and it helped set the festive mood. In another area were highlighted the musical stylings of Four by Eight, a new band comprised of members of Three Men and a Tenor and J & J Sounds by playing the promotional video from their first ever show. Happy Homecoming Week LCC!

This week there are some great activities happening around campus as part of Homecoming 2010, which is hosted by the Alumni Association. Last year was our first Homecoming celebration. This year it has expanded from one day to an entire week full of fun and spirit. All throughout the week you may pick up a FREE LCC Stars Athletic T-Shirt at the GB Welcome Center with the donation of a canned good or a dollar.

Wear your LCC Gear TODAY! In honor of spirit day, everyone is being asked to wear their LCC clothing with pride. Don't forget about the free shirts that are around campus; you have no excuse to not show your spirit! Today is also the Pep-Rally to get everyone pumped for the Men's and Woman's Basketball games tonight at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Join us from 11:30-1:30 in the A&S Kennedy Cafeteria, 2nd Floor for some delicious tailgate food and to meet your student athletes! You might even be able to catch a few special demonstrations from the cheerleaders if you're lucky!

Also, don't forget that as a student of employee of LCC, you get into the games for free! This week you can also pick up special homecoming tickets all around campus to earn extra discounts and perks. There are also tickets for the Battle of the Bands show at The Loft of Lansing, which is taking place tomorrow and is sponsored by the American Marketing Association and for Saturday's basketball games.

Sunday is an extra-special Shop Like A Star event at Eastwood Towne Center from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. where all LCC students, employees, and alumni are treated like VIPs. Check-in at the store-front hosted by the Alumni Association for special prizes and a coupon book full of amazing One Day Only Deals. October 4x8 Concert Fundraiser

The four singers of "Three Men & a Tenor" have joined together with eight members of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra Big Band and J and J Sounds to create a new sound! On October 17, 2010 the LCC Foundation had the privilege of presenting Four by Eight (4x8) in a Debut Concert at Dart Auditorium with two shows.

The shows received rave reviews from the audience and featured some great songs which varied from Classic Big Band, favorite Rock and Roll songs, and Motown, with amazing vocals and instrumentation.

The auditorium was filled with great sounds and with an audience full of people having fun grooving to the unique music! The combination of sounds was just out of this world. I think it is safe to say that people were glad they attended!

Not only did people come to have a great time, but they were also supporting the LCC Foundation and student scholarships. The concert was a special fundraising event for the Ronald K. Edwards Ph.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund. What a great way to raise money for our LCC Student Scholarships. Stay tuned to find out about our next Four by Eight concert (do I hear jingle bells?!).

EDF Photo Contest

Do you have any photos of your favorite place to relax or eat lunch at Lansing Community College? How about an artsy shot of the Shigematsu Memorial Garden? Or any great shots from East or West campus?

It's time for our annual EDF Calendar Photo Contest! Each year, the Employee Development Fund (EDF) puts together a calendar of academic dates, holidays, and EDF events. This year the contest is open to all EDF Members and to all LCC Photography students!

The winner of the selected photo will receive $100 as a prize, recognition by name below the photo on the printed calendar, and a Campus Communication announcement of the winning photographer!

All photos must be 4x6 prints. Up to three different photos may be submitted and all must be printed copies. Both black & white and color photos are welcome. If you wish your photos returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope and include your name on the back of each photo.

All entries must be received in the Foundation office by THIS TUESDAY November 9, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.

Scholarship Awards Breakfast 2010

This year's Scholarship Awards Breakfast was our biggest and best yet. Each year we invite our scholarship recipients and donors to a special recognition breakfast to showcase student success. As of 9/30/2010, the Foundation had awarded 297 scholarships, amounting to over $340,000 for the 2010-2011 academic year and approximately 350 people attended the breakfast. At this event, many of the recipients and donors were able to meet, which builds a special relationship for everyone involved. Since last year's breakfast, we have added 31 new scholarship funds, because so many people care about our students futures! These scholarships make it possible for students to afford college and get the skills and training they need to enhance our community.

This year we had several wonderful speakers including Timothy Salisbury, Regional President of PNC Bank, speaking on behalf of the PNC scholarship that was established in 2010; Mark Edick, a former Foundation Scholarship recipient who is now a published author; Hannah Martin, the 2010-2011 LAFCU Scholarship Recipient; Bob Anderson, Treasurer of the LCC Foundation Board of Directors and founder of the Robert and Alana Anderson Healthcare Scholarship; Frank Bernier, founder of the Francis and Sandra Bernier Endowed Scholarship. Timothy, Bob, and Frank outlined their decision to donate to the Foundation to make student success possible. Our two student speakers, Mark and Hannah, spoke of the impact the scholarship award has made toward the pursuit of higher education.

We strive to highlight speakers from a variety of areas in order to effectively illustrate the impact of scholarships on student education. We enjoy being able to show the recipients how much their community cares about their success, as well as being able to show our donors the great impact they have on our students.

Aside from live speakers, we also had the premier of our 2010 Recipient Testimonials video. This video shares the stories of four Lansing Community College students and the impact our scholarships have made in their lives. We are so glad that this year has been so successful already! Thank you to everyone who has donated and volunteered their time with the LCC Foundation. Join us in the Run/Walk for Education

The LCC Foundation is joining up with Champions For Charity to participate in the "Heart of a Spartan" Walk/Run event on Sunday May 2. We invite you to join us for the Race and at the same time help us raise scholarship money for our many students in need.

The race starts at the MSU Spartan Stadium and ends by running through the tunnel, under the goal post and finishing at the 50 yard line. See yourself on the big screen! Participants running or walking with Lansing Community College will wear a specially designed T-Shirt. The LCC Men's and Women's Track Team will lead us off on all the races of the day! Come join in the Fun!

Demmer Corporation supports students at LCC

The Lansing Community College Foundation is the recipient of a $100,000 gift from the

Demmer Corporation

to create and fund the John and Marnie Demmer Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The fund will support students enrolled in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology programs at LCC.

“I am delighted that we have such a positive response to the need of our students by one of our local major corporations, such as Demmer,” states Pat Ouellette, the LCC Foundation Chairperson.

The establishment of the endowment fund continues a family tradition of support to Lansing Community College students. In 1990, Bill Demmer’s aunt and uncle, David and Karen Noe, established the Gustave A. and Marguerite Olofsson endowment fund in memory of their parents and Mr. Demmer’s grandparents. The Olofsson Endowment Fund also supports students in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology programs.

“The Lansing Community College has a unique skill set that can train and retrain our regional population for the new economy. Private businesses have historically been the real job generators of our society. One of the best ways for our economy to meet foreign competition is for our work force to be in constant training and skill development. Our community colleges are at the fore front of that effort. I hope that in some small way that our contribution to Lansing Community College inspires and helps our regional workforce to build world class skills,” comments donor William Demmer.
